The main reason why Johnny Depp was fired by Warner Bros. from the Fantastic Beasts franchise has been revealed.
Geekosity has learned that Depp was cut by Warner Bros. Pictures chief Toby Emmerich due to bad publicity emanating from the U.K. libel case that Depp had lost on November 2 against The Sun publishers News Group Newspapers, which described him as a "wife beater" in a 2018 article.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, "The judge’s ruling makes it a lot easier for news outlets to use similar depictions when referring to Depp’s stormy two-year marriage to actress Amber Heard." Consequently, it would create a PR nightmare for Warner Bros., who are nevertheless keeping Heard as Mera for DC Films despite the social-media controversy over allegations made against her by Depp.
WB will still have to pay Depp's full salary for the third Fantastic Beasts movie despite only filming one scene.
