Scoop: WB Seriously Considering New 'Swamp Thing' Episodes

Written By Mikey Sutton • Editor-in-Chief • Owner

DC Universe drained the swamp, but Swamp Thing may be breathing in new air.

When the CW announced that the first and only season of Swamp Thing would be aired on their network, speculation rose to the surface. Could it return on the CW instead? I reported on May 23 on the JLS Comics YouTube channel that there is the possibility of Swamp Thing being revived on the CW if the ratings are solid.

Spoiler alert: The ratings are solid.

According to TVLine, Swamp Thing "gave the network’s 8 o’clock hour its largest audience since May 19 (DC’s Stargirl), and the 90-minute period its best audience since Feb. 4." While it's only for the first installment, sources tell me that the CW and Warner Bros. are seriously considering planting the show permanently in its new spot. It's performance in the weeks ahead will render the final judgment but the outlook for Swamp Thing has never been better.

Swamp Thing originally debuted on the DC Universe streaming channel on May 31, 2019; despite critical praise and fan applause, it was quickly axed for mysterious reasons, most of which were not official explanations. The Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover a few months ago on the CW fueled rumors of the series possibly finding a home there, and the whispers have gotten louder. When the CW released motion posters of Arrowverse shows with Swamp Thing, eyebrows were raised but it was obviously a marketing gimmick. However, there is something happening, a wait-and-see plan that is gradually evolving. Insiders are unsure if the show, if picked up by the CW, will retain its original creative team. As I recently leaked, the CW is looking into giving Matt Ryan's John Constantine his own series, and they add that they could combine both properties on one program; after all, Constantine made his comics debut in Saga of the Swamp Thing No. 37 in 1985. Ryan's participation would certainly guarantee this falling under the supervision of Arrowverse producer Greg Berlanti. So far no decisions have been made.
