'Supergirl' Will End Next Season

Supergirl is hanging up her cape.

The CW has announced that the next season of Supergirl, its sixth, will officially be its last with 20 new episodes to finish the series. Star Melissa Benoist issued the following statement on social media:

"To say it has been an honor portraying this iconic character would be a massive understatement. Seeing the incredible impact the show has had on young girls around the world has always left me humbled and speechless. She’s had that impact on me, too. She’s taught me strength I didn’t know I had, to find hope in the darkest of places, and that we are stronger when we’re united. What she stands for pushes all of us to be better. She has changed my life for the better, and I’m forever grateful."

Saying farewell to Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was already a gut punch; the loss of Supergirl is also rough. With Melissa Benoist's pregnancy, I was wondering how they would address that on the show. I recently leaked a rumor of Power Girl appearing on the series, and now I'm wondering if that could fill in the void by this program's absence. Of course, Superman & Lois will debut in 2021 but that won't have this series' girl power. Expect Benoist to make guest appearances on the other DC CW shows in the future.
